Messier 101 is a grand design spiral galaxy

in the constellation of Corvus (The Crow)

Tropical Storm Fernand packed sustained winds of 45 mph and had just recently made landfall over northeastern Mexico

the total amount of gas is billions of times the mass of the Sun — a rich reservoir of material for future generations of stars

The ionized gas glows in visible light

Many previously hidden features, scattered across a spectacular celestial landscape of gas, dust and young stars, have emerged. Credit: ESO T. Preibisch
