NAC also has great potential as a fungicidal molecule against the phytopathogenic fungus Sclerotinia minor , as it can play a crucial role in two distinct ways: at concentrations higher than 20 mmol liter 1 , it acts directly as a cytotoxic oxidant, with increased formation of secondary radicals based on cysteine becoming cytotoxic, and at lower concentrations, it can inhibit sclerotic formation, keeping the fungus in an undifferentiated hyphal phase, thus allowing unprotected mycelium to be degraded by soil microorganisms (Patsoukis and Georgiou 2007)
